April Showers Bring May Flowers – Plants To Grow Outside In May

April was a month that was all over the place with regards to weather and a lot of people were going to start to think about planting the garden. This is when you should know more about some of the plants you are able to start planting outside when the weather is getting warmer in the start of May. Yes, I know it can be a little bit of a challenge to find the plants you are going to grow. However, when you are looking at this article you will notice that we are mainly talking about the plants to start outside and they tend to be more of your leafy greens that cannot really tolerate the heat that much.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a plant that you should have started indoors back in March or so. That is because the plants are going to  need to be transplanted. So you will want to start to move your plants out early in the month to make sure they are going to be ready to go out in the ground. The plants are going to be a more of a cold weather crop and one that will start to bolt when the heat gets to it.

Kale

This is a plant that tends to be cold hardy as well. Now a lot of the reports will say that you have to start the seeds indoors, but I can tell you that I have never really had any problems direct sowing them in the ground. The downside is these plants have a tendency to take over once they start to grow so you need to make sure you have plenty of space to put them in because if you have the same experience that I do it can easily overrun your garden.

Lettuce

When you think about this you can usually get lettuce all year round at the local farmers market. That is because lettuce has a tendency to be very cold hardy when compared to a lot of the plants that you can grow. So you will like the fact that this is a plant that you can direct sow into the ground. When the nights get really cool you may have to cover them up with a blanket to keep the plants from getting damaged. However, in my experience I tend to put the plants in pots because they are going to grow quickly and start to produce and be harvested within most of time about twenty days or so.

Spinach

A lot of people have a love it or hate it relationship with Spinach. So you will want to know that this is  plant that you can start early as well. The spinach will make it a lot easier for you to have a plant that you are able to grow early on in the year and even extend out a couple of harvest from the plants. Like some of the lettuces that we tend to use we have been able to grow the Spinach that we are eating very successfully in the pots and this makes it easier for us to move it in if we get some of the freak freezes that can hit in the earlier parts of May at times.

Is That All The Plants To Grow Early In May?

Obviously this is not an exhaustive list of plants that you can start in early May. However, these are some of the plants that we have a tendency to start out directly in the early planting season of May. So you will like this fact as well because it is going to make it easier for you to get the planting done and get the garden going quickly and easily. With that it is going to be easier for us to get the garden going and have our harvest spread out over a longer time period instead of having it all come in at the same exact time. hat being the
