How To Make Your Own Buttermilk

July 28, 2015 Tobit Recipes

Buttermilk is one of those items that we rarely keep around the kitchen anymore, but when you go to bake it often ends up the one item that you need to have is going to be buttermilk. However, it never fails the store only carries the large size of buttermilk and of course it cost a fortune. What makes it even worse is you find out that you need the buttermilk on the days that you have already settled down or you are getting ready to make breakfast for your kids because they want to have the homemade waffles that they love. At least that is my case as it is going to be one of the ways that I end up getting hit for the waffles first thing in the morning and of course it takes buttermilk, the one item I never keep on hand.

Now the key point is, I used to not keep this on hand, but then I found out how to make my own buttermilk and have decided to share that information on the farm page here. The funny part is when I mentioned this to my mother-in-law, she told me that they were doing the exact same thing when she was younger and thought I already knew, but they used a slightly different recipe. Here is what I have done to make my own buttermilk and I know that you will enjoy it as well.

What You Need

1 Cup Measuring Cup

The Method

Homemade Buttermilk IngredientsNow comes the bread or in this case the buttermilk. What is shocking is the speed this takes to be completed. The best part is you can walk away from this mixture as well for a short time frame and it will make itself while you are doing something else. So that allows me time to go out and get my animals fed.

What you need to do is take your measuring cup and fill it up with a cup of milk. As you can tell in the picture, I decided to make a double batch, but the process is the same. After you have measured out your milk, you will want to take your lemon juice and put one tablespoon in the milk. That is all that you have to do to get the process started in making your buttermilk.

The key is you just let it sit for a minimum of five minutes, but for me the last time I made this it sat for about a half hour or so. After that time period it is going to be easy for you to get the buttermilk that you want and will make it easier for you to make the waffles that your kids want made from scratch when you first get woken up by them in the morning.

Hope you all enjoyed the information on how you can make your buttermilk. I hope you are able to put this information to good use and be able to find the waffle recipe that you want to use, without having to worry anymore about running out of buttermilk.
